Bahut log sochte hain ki ice freeze hona matlab AC bahut achha kaam kar raha hai. Yeh bilkul galat hai. Ice on the evaporator coil is always a malfunction signal.
Why Ice Forms
The evaporator coil runs at 5–8°C normally. Room air blows over it, heat transfers, cooled air returns. If coil temperature drops below 0°C — moisture freezes instead of dripping. Ice builds up, blocks airflow completely, and the entire system runs inefficiently with no useful cooling output.
3 Causes of AC Freezing in Samastipur
Cause 01 — Low Refrigerant Gas
Most Common — ₹1,200–₹2,600
When gas is low, remaining refrigerant over-expands in the evaporator — dropping coil temperature far below normal, sometimes to -10°C. Ice forms rapidly. Signs: very little air from indoor unit, compressor running non-stop, ice on the thin copper pipe near indoor unit. Fix: leak detection + repair + gas refill. Do not just defrost and restart — gas leak must be fixed or ice returns within hours.
Cause 02 — Dirty Air Filter
Free Fix — Check This First
In Samastipur's dusty conditions, the air filter blocks within 4–6 weeks of summer use. Reduced airflow = coil gets too cold = ice forms. Signs: very little air on high fan speed, visibly grey filter when you open the front panel. Fix: remove filter, wash under running water, dry 1 hour, reinstall. If ice already formed — switch to fan-only mode 20–30 minutes first, then clean filter.
Cause 03 — Fan Motor Running Slow
₹300–₹900
Weak indoor blower capacitor causes fan to run at 60–70% speed — same effect as dirty filter. Not enough warm air over coil, temperature drops below freezing. Signs: fan speed visibly lower even on high setting, ice forming even with clean filter. Fix: capacitor ₹300–₹600, bearing lubrication/replacement ₹400–₹900.
🔴 Do Not Ignore Repeated Freezing: An AC that freezes repeatedly is actively damaging itself. Liquid refrigerant entering the compressor during freeze cycles causes liquid slugging — damages compressor valves. ₹1,500 gas refill now prevents ₹6,000 compressor replacement later.
What to Do Right Now
- Switch AC off completely at the MCB
- Switch to fan-only mode — runs blower without cooling to melt ice faster
- Place towels below indoor unit — melting ice creates significant dripping
- Wait 20–40 minutes until ice fully melted
- Clean the air filter thoroughly
- If it freezes again within 2 hours — call Repair Guru for gas check
💡 Prevention Tip: Set AC at 24°C instead of 18°C. Very low set temperatures combined with Samastipur's extreme heat create conditions where freezing is more likely. At 24°C the coil runs at a healthier temperature.

Frequently Asked Questions
AC ki copper pipe pe ice kyun jamti hai?
Ice usually low refrigerant gas ya blocked airflow (dirty filter) ki wajah se jamti hai. Coil temperature 0°C se neeche jaati hai aur air ki moisture freeze ho jaati hai.
AC freeze hone par kya karna chahiye?
AC off karo, fan-only mode mein 20-30 minute chalao taaki ice pighal jaye. Phir filter saaf karo. Agar dobara freeze ho toh gas check karwao.
Kya AC freeze hone se compressor kharab ho sakta hai?
Haan — repeated freezing mein liquid refrigerant compressor mein ja sakta hai — liquid slugging — jo compressor valves damage karta hai. Ignore karna costly hai.
AC freeze hone ke baad kitna time lagta hai theek hone mein?
Ice melt: 20–40 minutes fan-only mein. Filter issue toh us ke baad normal. Gas issue toh same day gas refill ke baad.
