Geyser Tripping MCB in Samastipur — Why It Keeps Happening & What to Do

1. Earth Leakage from Damaged Heating Element — Most Dangerous

The heating element inside your geyser is a metal rod coated in a ceramic insulating layer. Over time — accelerated by Samastipur's hard water mineral deposits — this ceramic coating cracks. When it does, the live element makes contact with the water inside the tank. Current flows from the element into the water and out through the geyser body to earth — tripping the MCB.

This is the most serious cause. The MCB is doing exactly what it's supposed to do — protecting you from electrocution. If you were to disable or bypass it, or use a larger MCB thinking it's "too sensitive," you'd be bathing in live water. We see this exact situation lead to serious accidents across Bihar every year.

2. Faulty Thermostat Causing Overheating

The thermostat cuts power to the element when the water reaches the set temperature — usually 60–70°C. If the thermostat fails in the "always on" position, the element keeps heating even after the water is at full temperature. The water eventually starts to boil, pressure builds, and the thermal cutout (TCO) trips — which in turn trips the MCB.

You'll notice this pattern: geyser works fine initially, then trips after 30–40 minutes of being switched on. The water will be extremely hot — almost scalding — before the trip. That's the thermostat not cutting off the element when it should.

3. Undersized MCB for Your Geyser

A standard 15-litre storage geyser draws about 2,000 watts. That requires a minimum 10 Amp MCB on a dedicated circuit. A 25-litre geyser drawing 3,000 watts needs a 16 Amp MCB. In many Samastipur homes — especially older constructions — geysers are connected on shared circuits with older wiring and smaller MCBs that weren't sized for modern appliances.

If the MCB trips consistently right when the geyser switches on (not after a delay), this is likely the cause. The fix is upgrading the MCB and possibly the wiring to handle the load. This is a legitimate electrical upgrade — not a geyser fault.

4. Damaged Wiring or Loose Connections
