The wash cycle ended 40 minutes ago. You lift the lid and find your clothes sitting in a drum full of dirty water. The machine did not drain. This is one of the most frustrating washing machine problems — partly because you cannot remove wet clothes easily, and partly because it is not always obvious what went wrong.
In our experience repairing washing machines across Samastipur, Dalsinghsarai, and Rosera, drain problems come from six distinct causes. Each one has a different fix, a different cost, and a different level of urgency. Here is everything a technician would check, in the order we actually check it.
Before diving in, it helps to understand that semi-automatic and front-load machines drain very differently. A semi-automatic has a separate spin tub with its own pump — a small motor that pumps water out through a drain hose. A front-load fully automatic has an internal drain pump protected by a filter, and it relies on the door latch sensor to confirm the door is sealed before starting the drain cycle.
This distinction matters because the same symptom — water not draining — has completely different root causes depending on which type you have.
The drain hose carries water from the machine to your drain pipe or bucket. In many Bihar homes, this hose runs along the floor and gets stepped on, bent, or squeezed behind the machine. A tight kink is enough to stop water flow completely.
Check this first: Pull the machine out slightly and trace the drain hose from back of machine to where it ends. Look for sharp bends. Feel for hardness — a blocked section will feel different from an empty one. Also check if the drain pipe outlet is sitting too deep inside a wall pipe, creating a siphon effect.
This is a free fix if it is just a kink. If the hose has cracked or hardened over time, replacement costs ₹150–₹300.
Every front-load washing machine has a small filter — usually behind a panel at the bottom front of the machine. Its job is to catch coins, hairpins, buttons, and lint before they reach the drain pump. Over time, this filter gets completely blocked, and the pump cannot push water through it.
This is extremely common in Samastipur homes where children's clothes with sand and small stones are washed frequently.

The drain pump is a small electric motor with an impeller that creates suction to pull water out of the drum. When the motor burns out, the pump seizes, or the impeller breaks — no draining happens. You might hear the machine trying to drain (a low hum) but nothing comes out.
Signs: Humming sound at the expected drain point in the cycle, error code on display (E3 on Samsung, F21 on Whirlpool, C2 on LG — check your manual), or complete silence when drain should be happening.

In top-load automatics, there is a lid switch — a small safety sensor that tells the machine the lid is closed before it starts spinning or draining. If this switch breaks, the machine stays in wash mode indefinitely, never progressing to drain and spin.
In front-load machines, the door latch performs the same function. If the latch does not click properly (often due to wear or a bent striker), the machine will refuse to drain.
Test: With the machine in a stuck cycle, try pressing down firmly on the lid or pushing the door in. If the machine suddenly starts draining, the switch or latch is your problem.
Fix: Lid switch replacement ₹300–₹600. Door latch assembly ₹400–₹800.
The PCB (printed circuit board) is the brain of a fully automatic washing machine. It sends electrical signals to the drain pump at the right point in the cycle. If the board is damaged — often due to voltage fluctuations in Bihar's power supply — it may fail to send the drain signal even though everything else works fine.
Signs: Machine works perfectly for wash but skips drain and spin entirely, no humming from pump during expected drain phase, same problem happens consistently on every cycle.
Fix: Depending on the fault, sometimes a single relay or capacitor on the board can be replaced (₹300–₹500). Full PCB replacement is ₹1,800–₹4,000. We always try component-level repair before recommending board replacement.
Semi-automatic machines use a rubber belt connecting the motor to the spin tub and drain pump. When this belt wears thin, slips, or snaps, the spin tub does not rotate and the drain pump does not engage — water stays put.
Signs: Motor sound present but spin tub not spinning, drain pump not activating, burning rubber smell when machine tries to run.
Fix: Belt replacement ₹150–₹300 for the part. Labour ₹200–₹300. Quick repair — usually done in 30 minutes.
